Patient Advocacy
You’re a patient and you may wonder whether HIPAA has any value for you – or if it’s just something some healthcare workers say when they don’t want to be bothered: “We can’t do this or that because of HIPAA. . .”
From questions about how to get copies of your medical records, to knowing your rights, to getting information about a loved one from a hospital across the country, I know what the answers are and how you can use them.
What I can do for you: Services
- Help you get copies of your health records (medical, dental, etc.), even when they’re from many years ago
- Guide you in the process of requesting corrections or amendments to you or your children’s health records
- Help you get copies of your children’s health records
- Educate you about who can have access to your health records without your prior authorization
- Help you understand what your health provider is required to do to protect your health information
- Help you determine whether your privacy rights have been violated, and what to do about it
- Guide you in filing a complaint with your healthcare provider, and/or Health & Human Services
- Assist you with ensuring that you and your family have proper authorizations for disclosures of your health information
- Assist you with protecting your health information from possible unauthorized disclosures
- Empower you to insist that your healthcare providers tell you when they’ve disclosed your health information for any reason other than for treatment, payment of charges, or routine internal business operations
Have I handled other cases like yours?
Yes. I’ve been the HIPAA Privacy Officer since 2002 at a healthcare system that has 300 beds, 1.5M outpatient visits every year, and has more than 6,000 employees. We’ve got a complaint-per-employee ratio of .002. In the five-and-one-half years since the HIPAA Privacy Rules became effective in 2003, we’ve had exactly one complaint from Health & Human Services. I take a very proactive approach when it comes to determining whether our facility is always compliant, as well as our dealings with other healthcare facilities, local and state health-related agencies, law enforcement, etc., so while I can’t honestly say that I’ve “seen it all” – I’ve seen and heard a lot.
It’s very likely that whatever issue you’re having, I’ve heard of it and resolved it. And if I haven’t, then I’ll do the research, provide you with the answer AND the citation proving that my answer is correct.
What do I charge for my services?
Most likely, the answers to your concerns can be found in my e-book, which is only $39.95.
But, if you believe that you’ve suffered a privacy violation and would like me to help you address it directly with your provider (with your prior written authorization), the charge for this service is $75. You will receive a log of the spent on your case.
If you would like a personal consultation about other HIPAA Privacy or Security-related matters, I charge $75 per hour, billed in 30-minute increments in advance. You will receive a log of the time we spent.
How long will it take to perform the services you need?
That depends. If you have a problem that I’ve handled before, then most likely I will refer you to my e-book. If you would like me to work with your provider to address a privacy or security complaint, such issues normally take a minimal amount of time depending on how cooperative your provider’s staff are.
Do I have time to handle the work you need to have done?
Yes. I am building this practice from the ground up – your issues and concerns are welcomed.
Do I have references?
Absolutely! You can start with Cathy White, esq., cwhite73@satx.rr.com.
Do I provide written reports about the services I’ve provided?
Yes.
